Kerry people invited to mark History week at CBS The Green

CBS The Green will launch their annual history week on Monday February 27th when two incredible exhibitions will arrive at the school to be displayed to students and the wider community.  One of the exhibitions will be on loan from the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences in UCC and is named the ‘Atlas of the Irish Revolution’.  It comprises of 12 large banners containing a unique set of maps, photographs, painting and documents in order to bolster student’s understanding of the revolutionary period, enthuse them about local and national history, and possibly inspire them to take on research of their own.

The second and equally impressive exhibition compromises of banners relating to the restoration of The Aud, a four year long project, undertaken by the Tralee Bay Heritage Association.  The project was a hugely significant salvage operation initiated in 2012 when the boats anchors were raised from the seabed where it had lain undisturbed for 96 years.  Thanks to the hard work of Chairman John Moriarty and committee member Stephen O’ Sullivan the exhibition will be accompanied by one of the restored anchors in the school.  The Aud itself of course was scuttled in Cork harbour after being escorted there from Tralee Bay by the British who intercepted it, resulting in the loss of 20,000 rifles and a million rounds of ammunition geared towards the 1916 Rising.

The public will have an opportunity to enjoy the exhibition on Wednesday March 1st between 4-5pm with light refreshments being served in the main foyer of the school’s extension where the exhibitions will be housed.  At 5pm a talk will be hosted free of charge by local historian and journalist. T. Ryle Dwyer who is a prolific writer on the revolutionary period. Among his countless contributions to this period is a book entitled: ‘Tans, Terror and Troubles: Kerry’s real fighting story’.
